Congleton is an ancient market town in South East Cheshire. Congleton was granted its town charter in 1272 by Henry Lacy, who was Earl of Lincoln and Constable of Chester at the time. Today Congleton is a thriving large town of around 29,000 and has a twice weekly market on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Congleton is known as 'Beartown' for legend has it that in Elizabethan times the people of Congleton sold the Town Bible to buy a bear. Bear baiting was a popular past-time in those far off days, and it is thought that this was done because the old bear died just before the annual Wakes when all businesses shut down.
