Sutherland Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms for Sutherland.

The arms show a black raven, an important badge for the Vikings and part of the Jarldom of Sudrland (South-land), the medieval predecessor of the region. The stars are taken from the historical arms of Moray, Hugh of Moray, Lord of Sutherland in the 13th century, bore three golden stars on red. These are taken in the arms as being the oldest heraldic devise of a Lord of Sutherland.

The motto is 'Dluth lean do Dhutchas le Durachd' - Cling close to thy Heritage with Diligence.

The IBD Home Page and each IBD County Page has or will have (where possible) the relevant Coat of Arms. This is made possible thanks to a fantastic heraldry website called the International Civic Heraldry Website. Sometimes a description is not given due to lack of information, so if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. You may visit this superb site by using the link below.
